“Cold and very wet water”

one of the jobs I have done lately ¬†(and another favorite client) is Surf lifesaving New Zealand . A few weeks back we shot a few picture for a new manual . Surf life saving ¬†the service will start using jet skis a cross the country , to use alongside there IRB ¬†boats .

I have great admiration for these guys they do a great job during the summer and have to deal with more than there fair share of idiots ¬†.

most of the pictures where shot with a canon 500mm and a 1.4 convertor ¬†on a 7d (a a few with the canon 1 d ¬†mark4) ¬†giving me a lens of 1120mm lens which was still on the limit as the waves where a bit further out the assignment was ¬†shot in one of the two locations , with this one being in Muriwai in Auckland ¬†on a good surf day .

It has been a very busy few weeks with lots going on so big ¬†lack of blogs ¬†.I have pretty much just going from one job to another ¬†so I’m catching up now . A Couple weeks ago I was covering the Rally of New Zealand for AFP along with Nigel Marple from Reuters , and Ross Land ¬†we all headed off to cover the rally for the three days.

in the three days we covered 1300 km and went from Northland to the Waikato.

Rally of NZ is one of my favorite ¬†events that I cover for AFP , we sign away our lives get given a green bib and told to go nuts ,stand where you like if you get run over its your fault!!

the Rally is quite ¬†a hard ¬†event one to cover ,we would pick a spot that looked good on the map drive there ,load up the cameras up on ya back and then head off up the road sometimes its a 1km walk sometimes a 5 km walk ¬†allways looking for that one spot that you think is the place to be it may be a great corner or a slight jump , the cars are traveling up to 200km a hour ¬†on metal roads so you dont have much time. even with the Canon mark 4 camera that I use that shoots ten frames a second you only get four or may five frames before the car has passed and you are getting showered in rocks as the car blast off down the road

the Tale of Two cups

something happened a few weeks ago that I can’t see I will repeat any time soon, I was hired to shoot the football world cup by Coca cola as it did a world tour and stopped off in New Zealand for a visit , and at the same time our video crew from www.thevc.co.nz ¬†were shooting the rugby world cup in Wellington for a promo for the 500 days for the Rugby world cup ! I cant see the two cups ever being back in New Zealand ¬†at the same time again … unless we win the football world cup that is …¬†Coca cola put on a big event where lucky members of the public could get a picture with the Football world cup ,( New Zealand ¬†will be at the Football world for the first time in many years)

the cup travels in style where I was told on some stages of the trips it has its own plane!! , while it was in NZ in flew every where by helicopter !¬†

Huge Bugs and wetsuits

Have just finished ¬†shooting a job in Thailand on the island of Krabi for a client . was a very hot and sticky day with the temp around 36 degrees ¬†, it was a full on day with a 4.30 am start ,the idea was to make most of the morning Light , trouble was it was not that nice a morning .

still we work with what he have and now I have a day of editing on the computer working out which of the 2864 pictures ¬†..not so much fun

the thing is when you write about these jobs they sound like so much fun with travel great locations etc ¬†which is all true , but there are few down sides , the heat and the Bugs ….huge bugs some the size of a sparrow!! and when the run into you they hurt !!! I now have bugs crawling around in my camera so I will have to have a good clean when i’m home

it was Thailand new year so its a three day holiday and as part of the tradition you throw water over ever one . the kids love it and there is nothing better than getting a white boy wet! so we where a target still you are not going to argue with a two ton elephant that wants to throw water over you!!

Fishing and the Louis Vuitton Trophy

I have spent he last three days covering the Semi and Finals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy for AFP .

Its the second time I have covered the event for AFP and its at good fun event , Long days but when the weather is good and wind is blowing in the right direction it can make for some great Pictures , Unfortunately we had neither for the last three days of the Finals ¬†but still we have to provide coverage no matter what the weather ¬†.

to cover the event we pile into small and fast photographer ¬†rib boats which gives us good access and the ability to race ahead and get shots of the boats as they round the marks ¬†all good fun the bonus for us in our boat is the skipper james and fishing lines aboard so in betwwen races and delays ( and there where a few Long ones!!) we headed out a went fishing !!

a total of 12 snapper for the day ¬†and top top it off I was still able to send ¬†couple of picture ¬†out as well, so all good fun !

Oh and Emirates team New Zealand won

Malaysia and the monsoon cup

Back in Dec I headed off to Malaysia for a couple of weeks to work with My good mate Gareth Cooke a very very good marine Photographer .

We were there to cover the World Match Racing tour , the Malaysia leg is called the Monsoon cup. it was the last leg of a Nine stop ¬†tour and as it happen a kiwi team www.blackmatchracing.com was at the top of the leader board and if they won the would win the event overall , which was kinda cool as one of my other companies I have a share in http://www.thevc.co.nz had designed there website and done some promotional video clip for the team , Hamish Hooper for editor had worked on the site and the video for quite a while and we had perfected the site so it could stream the races live over the net which I thought was rather cool. any way the guys won the Moonsoon Cup and won the title of world match racing champions ! , its always nice to see a Kiwi team win I can’t say i have done much yachting photography bar three America’s Cup and a Few Louis Vuittion cups but really enjoyed it and will hopefully be doing a few more Yachting Jobs in the future here are a couple ¬† pics from the Monsoon Cup

On the way to the World Cup

This was a Assignment I did a few months ago in November of last year it was the world cup Qualifier with New Zealand vs Bahrain ¬†, it was a home and away match with New Zealand drawing the first leg and ¬†needing to win by a goal in the home leg it was played at the Cake tin in Wellington , one of the best stadiums in New Zealand in my opinion .

I was there shooting for AFP , I have been working as a freelancer for AFP for quite a few years now and pretty much cover all of the International sport that passes through New Zealand¬†for them ¬†, ranging from Rugby (lots of Rugby!!) sailing, tennis Rally cricket etc etc , they are one of my favorite clients , but anyway back to the football , the stadium was a sell out and was packed and being a oval stadium the noise level was right up there ,with chanting all through the game.

I have been playing around with multi media presentations and trying to prefect that so I brought along my sound recorder and recorded the sound and have made it into a little piece ( it was cut using Aperture 3 from apple it was the first time I have used it and its rather nice !!) ¬†here is a link to the slide show http://www.brendonohagan.co.nz/multimedia.html
