05 Apr a low flying shoot …kinda of
We have just finished working on our latest video clip for Prada’s America cup team Luna Rossa which have been based in Auckland during the building and training part of there campaign .[vimeo width=”640″ height=”420″]http://vimeo.com/62525498[/vimeo]
We we asked to create a short video clip using onboard footage and from a chase boat , I was onboard and I didn’t really know quite what to expect but the crew were great and gave me great access on board shots where done on a 5 d mark 2 with a 16-35mm lens ,what I was not prepared for was how fast these yachts are and the acceleration they have , when the yacht is up to speed it rises up on two foils and you are “Flying ” above the water and it feels like flying it is a bizzare experience , the crew are calm and there is no shouting ( the crew are all have mics with ear pieces so the all can hear Commands ) or any sound other than the wind passing past the huge Carbon sail , but when they turn into the wind and get ready to race against Team New Zealand , its kinda like a horse being let out into a new paddock , it just wants to run , and run fast . I got the impression the the crew have a harder time keeping it and a slow pace than they do getting it to go fast, she seems to love speed , it seem to take on another life and does to not want to slow down .. ever ) , the crew is all very calm, the cross the Trampoline in the middle of the boat changing sides , the speeds Luna Rossa goes they are going, crossing the Trampoline is a skill in its self , by the time you take a step you bounce across the trampoline the boat yacht has moved and you land further back from when you started .
shooting wise it was great but getting steady shots while while it was moving at speed was more than a tad hard . it was a fantastic experience one I will not forget in a hurry , and makes the America cup a little more exciting to view .
